Forests and Wetlands

Forests cover large parts of eastern Vareth and occur more locally across the north, central lowlands, mountain foothills, and southeast. Even the largest forest belts are interrupted by river valleys, farmland, wetlands, uplands, settlements, and open country.

Vareth’s major wetlands are concentrated around river mouths, deltas, lakes, flood basins, and poorly drained lowlands. The Northern River Country contains numerous local wetlands, but remains primarily fertile plain and river valley rather than marsh.

Northern Woodlands

The Northern River Country contains extensive but fragmented woodland along rivers, foothills, lake shores, and less heavily cultivated ground.

These woods do not form a single continent-scale forest and have no universal proper name. Local forests, river woods, hunting grounds, and managed timberlands are separated by open plains, farmland, settlements, and wetlands.

Northern Wetlands

Wetlands occur throughout Avereth, especially around Lake Averen, major river junctions, flood basins, and the lower reaches of rivers approaching Dresael Bay and the Mereth Sea.

None forms a single named wetland region comparable to the largest eastern and southeastern systems. Large areas of agricultural land, grassland, woodland, and settlement separate the northern marshes from one another.

Greywood

The Greywood occupies wooded eastern and northeastern country associated with the Greyspine / Morrann.

The forest grows across weathered uplands, rocky valleys, lower ridges, and river-fed country. Exposed grey stone is common among the wooded slopes, particularly toward the Greyspine.

Greywood is not one uniform forest. River valleys, settlements, open uplands, and rocky ridges divide it into large connected woodland districts.

Highwood

The Highwood is a major forested region of elevated Eastern Vareth.

Its woodland spreads across uplands, hills, spring-fed valleys, and lower mountain slopes. Numerous streams and river headwaters rise within or near the forest, producing dense woodland broken by clearings, valleys, rocky heights, and wetter hollows.

The Elven name is Thalsaren, from thal, “living growth” or “flourishing vegetation,” and saren, “spring” or “water rising from the ground.”

Varesyl Forest

The Varesyl Forest forms the broad central-eastern forest belt of Vareth.

It extends across fertile river country and contains some of the continent’s largest continuous woodland areas, though major valleys, farmland, settlements, wetlands, and open ground regularly interrupt the forest.

Varesyl is Elven, from varen, “fertile land” or “living ground,” and syl, “forest” or “extensive woodland.” Elven speakers normally use simply Varesyl.

Norvael Wetlands

The Norvael Wetlands occupy lower eastern river country associated with the waterways approaching Lethmer Gulf.

They consist of floodplains, marshes, reed beds, wet meadows, shallow channels, oxbow waters, and seasonally inundated lowlands.

The Elven name Norvael combines nor, “confluence” or “gathered flow,” with vael, “valley” or “sheltered lowland.”

Saelneth Forests

The Saelneth Forests occupy much of the warmer and wetter southeastern woodland country.

They spread through broad river valleys, low hills, coastal hinterlands, and fertile ground between the southeastern river systems. The forests become increasingly maritime toward the Sunward Sea and mingle with wetlands around the lower rivers.

Saelneth is Elven, from sael, “sun” or “daylight,” and neth, “wild place” or “uncultivated country.” The name applies to the broader southeastern forest country rather than one uninterrupted forest.

Thalen Marshes

The Thalen Marshes surround Lake Thalen in the southeastern interior.

They form a broad mosaic of lake-margin marsh, reed beds, wet meadows, shallow channels, seasonally flooded woodland, and pools whose extent changes through the year.

The marshes connect Lake Thalen to the wider southeastern drainage network but remain distinct from the coastal Sarenor Fens.

Sarenor Fens

The Sarenor Fens form the largest major wetland complex of southeastern Vareth.

They occupy the lower Sarenor basin where the river divides into distributaries before reaching the Sunward Sea. The region contains broad floodplains, reed beds, wet forests, shallow lagoons, tidal channels, and seasonally flooded islands.

The Common name derives from the Sarenor River. No separate continent-scale Akkari name is required for the wetland complex.
