Ogrish

Ogrish is one of Vareth’s oldest mortal languages and shares ancient ancestry with Orcish and Trollish.

It is broad, heavy, and low in tone. Ogrish favors simple, weighty syllables and deep resonance over sharp clusters or extended throat sounds. Spoken naturally, it often sounds slower than Orcish and less rasping than Trollish.

Sound and Form

Ogrish favors broad vowels and heavy consonants.

Common vowels are a, o, u. e occurs less often, while i is uncommon in older native roots.

Common consonants include b, d, g, k, m, n, r, t, h. Characteristic combinations include gr, br, dr, kr, mb, ng.

Ogrish uses fewer hissing and throat-heavy sounds than Trollish and fewer dense clusters than Orcish.

Common word shapes include CVC, CVCV, CVCC, CCVC, CVCVC. Frequent endings include -g, -m, -n, -r, -um, -ar, -ag.

Words often contain broad open syllables such as gu, go, dra, bra, mu, dur. The language is naturally resonant, helped by the size and depth of an ogre’s chest and throat. Even ordinary speech carries considerable weight without necessarily sounding aggressive.

Apostrophes are not a normal feature of Ogrish.

Many roots are native cognates of Orcish and Trollish forms. Draconic influence is smaller and more heavily reshaped than in Trollish. vor, used for overwhelming or unnatural heat, is an ancient borrowing related to Draconic vaur. A separate old territorial term, darh, may also reflect early contact with Draconic domain language, though its form has been substantially naturalized.

Signature Terms

Ogrish retains a small set of old communal and ritual terms that are often preserved even in Common translation.

  • zarug — ogre shamanism, descended from the ancestral ritual word reconstructed approximately as *zharuk. It is cognate with orcish zharak and trollish zhoruk.
  • zarugan — a practitioner of zarug. The role ending -an is characteristic of this old formation and need not match the agent endings of the related languages.
  • dorum — an elder whose judgment and contribution have been proven; age alone does not make someone dorum.
  • dorumar — the collective body or council of dorum in a community.
  • brugan — a clan or hearth-community sharing work, stores, responsibilities, and enduring identity.
  • gordun — a master builder responsible for major lasting works.
  • vardun — a temporary task leader entrusted with a specific hunt, journey, construction, negotiation, migration, or war. The authority normally ends with the task.

The ending -dun survives especially in entrusted skilled roles, while -ar in dorumar functions as an old collective formation rather than the orcish-style personal agent ending.

Naming

Ogrish names usually derive from one strong root or compounds of two roots.

Personal names favor strength, size, family, endurance, protection, hearth, or physical qualities. Household names emphasize ancestry, home, shared hearth, or territory. Place names commonly derive from stone, landform, water, roads, shelter, size, or ownership.

Compounds often simplify where two heavy syllables meet. Repeated consonants may collapse, and unstressed vowels can be lost over time.

Structure

Ogrish favors direct sentence construction and relatively little grammatical ornament. Word order is flexible when emphasis is clear, but subjects and actions are usually stated plainly.

Kinship terms distinguish close blood relations, household membership, marriage ties, and dependents. Possession distinguishes between something merely held and something recognized as belonging to a household or lineage.

Writing

Native Ogrish uses large, simple signs built from thick strokes and broad angular forms. The script is well suited to carving into stone, wood, bone, and heavy tools. Handwritten forms remain relatively large and open compared with Orcish or Trollish.

Normal writing proceeds from left to right.

History and Influence

Ogrish developed from the same ancestral language as Orcish and Trollish. Compared with its relatives, it tends to preserve simpler syllables and reduce difficult clusters.

Draconic influence is limited. Some loans may descend from very early contact shared with the ancestral elder language, while others entered Ogrish independently and were reshaped heavily to fit Ogrish sound patterns.
