Tidecalling
Tidecalling is the native ossur magical tradition of shaping the movement and pressure of existing water through the Wyre.
Tidecallers work with currents, flow, undertow, surface rise, pressure, depth changes, surge, and related conditions in water that is already present. They do not create water from nothing or ignore the physical character of the body of water being shaped.
Relationship to the Wyre
Ossur with strong tidecalling aptitude perceive the Wyre through water with unusual sensitivity.
They can distinguish current, pressure, flow, undertow, depth changes, connected movement, and the way water responds to obstacles, tides, weather, and surrounding channels.
The Wyre allows a tidecaller to guide those conditions beyond ordinary physical ability, but the water remains a real medium with mass, momentum, boundaries, and surrounding terrain.
A narrow channel, open sea, river, harbor, flooded cavern, and still reservoir therefore behave very differently under tidecalling.
Practitioners
The Common practitioner term is tidecaller.
In Ossur the tradition is suulath and a practitioner is a suulathar.
Tidecallers can serve as navigators, rescuers, harbor defenders, divers’ support, flood responders, military specialists, and advisers on dangerous waterways. They are respected specialists but do not automatically govern.
Aptitude and Training
Most ossur are exceptionally skilled at reading water through biology and experience, but deliberate magical manipulation requires stronger aptitude and training.
Students learn to separate ordinary current sense from magical perception, understand the geometry of channels and obstacles, estimate how a change will propagate, and stop a working before it becomes unstable.
Training usually begins in controlled water before moving to surf, rivers, strong currents, deep water, storms, and complex coastal systems.
Core Principles
- Water must already be present.
- Movement and pressure are easier to redirect than to impose without support.
- Connected water transmits change, but distance and complexity reduce precision.
- Confinement can strengthen an effect while increasing danger.
- Large bodies of water offer enormous force but are correspondingly harder to control.
- Water continues behaving physically after magical influence is applied.
Tidecalling is therefore a discipline of flow and pressure rather than general water creation.
Water, Pressure and Flow
Current
Existing currents can be redirected, strengthened, weakened, divided, or locally opposed.
Pressure
Tidecallers can alter pressure relationships within water, helping or hindering movement, controlling surge, or creating dangerous localized forces.
Surface Movement
Waves, chop, surge, and local surface rise can be influenced where surrounding conditions support them.
Undertow and Submerged Flow
Submerged currents and undertow are especially important to ossur travel and defense. A tidecaller can make a passage easier, more difficult, or dangerous without changing what it looks like from above.
Vortices
A deliberately created violent vortex is called a suukar in Ossur. It is distinct from an ordinary natural circular current.
Capabilities
Tidecallers can:
- ease movement through a difficult channel;
- assist swimmers and divers;
- redirect dangerous currents;
- reduce or intensify localized surge;
- clear or complicate harbor approaches;
- disrupt boats and swimmers;
- move floating objects by manipulating surrounding flow;
- create or suppress undertow;
- form controlled vortices;
- contribute to flood response;
- shape defensive water conditions around coastal settlements.
In naval warfare, several skilled tidecallers can make a harbor or channel function like a major fortification.
Limitations
Tidecalling cannot create water from nothing.
It does not grant unrestricted control over blood or other fluids inside living bodies. Bloodwaking is a separate tradition with a different biological and magical basis.
A tidecaller cannot ignore the boundaries of the water being shaped. Small isolated volumes provide little force; enormous open bodies provide great force but are difficult to control precisely.
The tradition is poor at effects unrelated to external water movement, pressure, and flow.
Costs and Risks
Water carries momentum. A mistake can propagate beyond the intended area.
Strong currents, confined channels, storms, deep water, and large-scale pressure workings can overwhelm the practitioner or endanger allies as readily as enemies.
Tidecallers working while submerged also face ordinary physical dangers: exhaustion, collision, entrapment, pressure injury, drowning if they are not ossur, and loss of orientation.
Methods and Techniques
Tidecalling uses sustained perception, body position, movement, gesture, touch, and careful reading of the surrounding water.
Ossur practitioners often work while immersed because direct contact provides the clearest information, but some effects can be shaped from shore, a vessel, or another position when the relevant water remains within practical reach.
Large workings benefit from prior knowledge of depth, reefs, channels, tides, and obstacles.
Materials, Tools and Preparation
Maps, depth records, current observations, markers, ropes, diving equipment, and route knowledge can all support tidecalling without being magical requirements.
The water itself is the essential medium.
Prepared wards or markers can help several tidecallers coordinate around a harbor, channel, or settlement.
Advanced Practices
Advanced tidecalling can include large controlled vortices, coordinated harbor defense, manipulation of several current layers at once, sustained flood diversion, long channel workings, and precise pressure control around divers or submerged structures.
Complex work across a large connected body of water usually benefits from multiple practitioners.
Interaction with Other Magic
Stormweaving can change wind and pressure above water, indirectly altering waves, currents, and surge. Tidecalling manipulates the water itself.
Shamanism can work with water as an element but is less specialized in pressure, current structure, and submerged flow.
Arcane barriers and wards can resist localized water force without controlling the surrounding body of water.
Druidism can influence wetlands, living waterways, and ecological conditions but does not replace tidecalling’s direct control of flow and pressure.
Countermeasures and Resistance
Leaving the relevant water, moving into isolated volumes, closing gates or barriers, changing channel geometry, and using strong physical fortification can limit tidecalling.
Countermagic can disrupt a local working, but the water’s existing momentum remains after the magic ends.
A tidecaller also cannot safely force every body of water against its physical conditions; unfavorable geometry or overwhelming flow can defeat control.
Cultural and Social Role
Tidecallers are important to ossur navigation, rescue, settlement defense, fishing, diving, channel maintenance, and storm response.
Their authority is situational. A council may defer to a tidecaller during a flood or naval attack without granting that person permanent political power.
Legal and Ethical Status
Tidecalling is broadly accepted in ossur society, but deliberately endangering shared channels, shelters, harbors, swimmers, or neighboring settlements is treated seriously.
Because water routes are communal infrastructure, reckless manipulation can be both a magical offense and an attack on public safety.
Terminology
- tidecalling / tidecaller — Common.
- suulath / suulathar — Ossur tradition and practitioner.
- suukar — a deliberately created violent vortex.
