The First Flights

The First Flights begins when dragons become unmistakably present in Vareth. Wyrms are already ancient when the first dragonflights spread across the continent.

The origin of dragons lies beyond surviving history.

There is no reliable calendar for this period.

The First Dragonflights

Dragonflights spread across large parts of Vareth and establish enduring domains around hunting grounds, nesting sites, and territories suitable for raising young.

Their ranges are not fixed. Flights expand, divide, migrate, and disappear. Families contest territory with rivals, while entire branches sometimes abandon regions after prolonged conflict or failed nesting.

The War of Three Eyries

One of the greatest conflicts of the period is the War of Three Eyries.

Green and yellow dragonflights occupy overlapping ranges across the interior. Three important nesting territories become the center of a prolonged dispute over inheritance, hunting ground, and breeding territory.

The war erupts repeatedly across generations rather than continuing as one uninterrupted campaign.

Nests are destroyed. Young dragons are killed. Families retaliate years or decades after earlier attacks. Several lineages disappear entirely, while others abandon the contested regions.

The conflict eventually breaks the long overlap between the two flights. Green dragonflights increasingly consolidate through the eastern forests and uplands, while yellow dragonflights establish stronger domains in the western highlands.

The Keldvorn Wyrm War

White dragonflights moving into Keldvorn encounter a region already heavily occupied by wyrms.

The resulting Keldvorn Wyrm War lasts for decades.

Dragons take exposed nesting ground and hunting territory, but the wyrms prove impossible to remove completely. Deep wyrms remain entrenched beneath the mountains and glaciers, while sky wyrms continue to contest isolated ridges and feeding grounds.

The dragons ultimately secure a lasting domain without ever gaining complete control of the region.

Keldvorn remains divided between dragon territory and much older wyrm ranges.

Other Dragon Conflicts

The War of Three Eyries is not unique.

Dragonflight disputes occur throughout the period over succession, nesting territory, hunting ranges, stolen eggs, disputed offspring, and inherited grudges. Most remain regional, but some destroy entire families or force migrations across great distances.

Wyrms remain another constant source of conflict. Some dragonflights abandon otherwise valuable territory rather than continue fighting entrenched wyrm populations.

The Appearance of Drakes

Drakes appear after dragons but still long before the first mortal peoples.

By the end of the First Flights, wild drakes are established across parts of Vareth.

The period ends as the first sapient mortal peoples begin establishing themselves across Vareth.
