Dwarves

Overview

Dwarves are one of the three youngest major peoples of Vareth and share ancestry with humans and elves.

They are compact, dense, structurally durable people specialized for cold, altitude, steep terrain, heavy physical work, and sustained exertion under load.

Ancestry

Dwarves, humans, and elves descend from the same younger ancestral population.

Dwarves diverged toward compact stature, dense skeletal structure, powerful musculature, efficient oxygen use, and strong cold tolerance. They are now a distinct and stable people.

Physical Characteristics

Dwarves are short, averaging roughly the same height as goblins, but their body mass is dramatically greater.

They have broad torsos, deep chests, powerful hips and legs, thick limbs, large hands and feet, dense bones, strongly supported joints, and a low center of gravity.

Even comparatively lean dwarves retain the underlying compact and solid frame. Heavier individuals can approach or exceed the body mass of substantially taller humans.

Dwarves are exceptionally strong for their height and excel at lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, climbing under load, and repeating forceful movements.

Their endurance differs from human distance endurance. Dwarves are especially effective at slow, continuous exertion under resistance.

Males are generally heavier, broader through the shoulders and chest, and more muscular than females. Heavy facial hair is strongly characteristic of males and varies widely in density and length.

Female dwarves generally do not grow beards, though they retain the same broad, dense skeletal and muscular body plan.

Variation

Dwarves vary substantially in build, facial structure, hair, and complexion.

Skin commonly ranges through pale, fair, ruddy, lightly tanned, and medium warm complexions. Some populations are darker than others, but dwarves do not naturally reach the deepest brown and black complexion range found among humans.

Body build ranges from relatively lean and wiry to extremely broad, muscular, or heavy-set while preserving the characteristic dwarf frame.

Growth and Lifespan

Dwarves develop somewhat more slowly than humans and generally reach full physical maturity around 22–25 years.

A healthy dwarf commonly lives around 180–250 years.

They retain strength and physical capability for a large portion of adulthood. Age-related decline eventually reduces muscle mass, flexibility, hearing, recovery speed, and tolerance for injury, though their dense skeletal structure remains comparatively resistant to weakening.

Senses and Physiology

Dwarven vision performs somewhat better than human vision in dim conditions, though dwarves cannot see in complete darkness.

Their hearing is particularly effective at distinguishing low-frequency sound and vibration in enclosed or rocky environments. This remains ordinary biological perception rather than supernatural sensing through stone.

Dwarves possess large lungs relative to their height, strong respiratory muscles, and high oxygen-carrying capacity. They tolerate high elevation and reduced oxygen better than unacclimatized humans.

Their dense bodies and high muscle mass require substantial energy, especially during heavy labor.

The Wyre

Dwarves do not possess the broadly heightened Wyre sensitivity characteristic of elves. Magical sensitivity and aptitude vary between individuals, and most dwarves do not consciously perceive subtle Wyre conditions without training.

They also do not possess a general biological resistance to magical alteration. Their dense bodies, cold tolerance, strength, and structural durability are ordinary physiological traits rather than magical defenses.

The characteristic dwarven tradition of artifice developed culturally from trained magical practice combined with craft, engineering, and precise material work. It is not an innate function of dwarven bodies, and a dwarf with sufficient aptitude can learn other magical traditions as well.

Environmental Adaptation

Dwarves tolerate cold exceptionally well.

Their compact proportions reduce heat loss, while circulation and metabolism preserve core temperature efficiently. They remain vulnerable to severe exposure but can function comfortably in conditions that impair many other peoples.

Heat is more difficult. Their dense bodies generate and retain considerable heat during exertion, making severe hot and humid environments particularly taxing.

Dwarves can live in warmer climates but require more water, rest, and cooling during heavy work.

Reproduction and Heredity

Dwarves reproduce through live birth at a moderate rate.

Pregnancy lasts roughly ten to eleven months. Single births are strongly dominant. Among dwarves who reproduce, around three to six children across a lifetime is biologically ordinary, with births commonly separated by several years or more.

Humans, dwarves, and elves are biologically compatible with one another. Mixed children are healthy and fertile, with inherited traits combining unevenly rather than producing one fixed intermediate form.

Children inherit combinations of stature, build, complexion, hair, facial structure, cold tolerance, and other characteristics from both parents.
