Ogres

Overview

Ogres are one of the three oldest mortal peoples of Vareth. Their defining biological advantage is sheer physical mass and raw strength.

They possess enormous skeletal frames, immense musculature, powerful grips, and long leverage. Their size makes them the strongest of the related orc–troll–ogre peoples in absolute force, though it also carries substantial costs in food, water, agility, heat management, and recovery from serious injury.

Ancestry

Ogres, orcs, and trolls descend from the same ancient ancestral population. Their branch is the oldest known mortal lineage to have separated into distinct peoples.

Ogres developed toward increasing body size, leverage, and raw mechanical strength. They are now a distinct and stable people.

Physical Characteristics

Ogres are the tallest people on average, though only somewhat taller than trolls. Their body mass is far greater.

They have very broad shoulders and pelvises, deep chests and abdomens, thick limbs, enormous hands and feet, heavy bones, and exceptionally large muscle groups. Their heads are proportionally smaller relative to the body than those of most other peoples.

Ogres possess immense lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, dragging, grappling, and grip strength. An orc may produce faster or more explosive movement relative to body size, but an ogre can usually exert greater absolute force.

Their size also creates substantial inertia. They are not helplessly slow, but sudden acceleration, abrupt changes of direction, repeated jumping, narrow balancing, and rapid climbing are less efficient than for smaller peoples.

Ogres do not normally possess large tusks. Some have slightly enlarged or projecting canines, but these remain much smaller and less defining than orc or troll tusks.

Males are generally taller, heavier, and more muscular than females. Female ogres remain extremely large and powerful compared with the smaller peoples.

Variation

Ogres vary widely in body composition. Some are immensely muscular, others carry greater natural body fat, and many combine both.

Skin coloration may include warm grey, clay brown, ochre, dusty tan, deep brown, grey-olive, muted green, and pale or warm earth tones. Regional populations may favor particular ranges.

Their large body plan remains stable even in relatively lean individuals.

Growth and Lifespan

Ogres develop slowly compared with humans and usually reach full physical maturity around 19–22 years.

A healthy ogre commonly lives around 80–110 years. Reaching 120 is notably old, while surviving beyond 130 is exceptional.

Their enormous mass places persistent strain on joints, circulation, and supporting tissues. Old ogres may retain considerable raw strength while losing mobility and sustained stamina.

Senses and Physiology

Ogre senses are broadly capable but not unusually specialized.

Their bones, joints, tendons, and cartilage are necessarily strong enough to support extreme body mass. Much of their apparent toughness comes from thick muscle, heavy bone, and sheer size rather than troll-like regeneration.

Ogre skin is exceptionally thick and tough, even more resistant to superficial cutting and abrasion than orc skin. It remains living tissue rather than natural armor: weapons, heavy impacts, fire, and deep penetrating injuries can still cause serious harm.

Their hands retain fine motor control despite their size. Ogres are not inherently clumsy, though objects and tools designed for much smaller hands can be awkward to use.

Maintaining an ogre body requires very large absolute amounts of food and water. Hard physical labor increases these demands substantially.

Ogres can store considerable energy as body fat, but prolonged underfeeding eventually causes major loss of muscle and strength.

The Wyre

Ogres have a distinctive biological relationship with the Wyre: it takes hold of their bodies less readily than it does most peoples. This produces both resistance and limitation.

Direct magical effects that attempt to alter an ogre body tend to require greater power, take hold less completely, or fade sooner. Curses, compulsions, transformations, magical weakening, and similar workings are therefore less reliable against them.

The same resistance applies to beneficial direct magic. Magical healing, enhancement, transformation, and other effects that must act through the body are also harder to impose. Ogre resistance is not selective between helpful and harmful magic.

This does not protect ogres from ordinary physical consequences produced by magic. Fire created or directed by magic can still burn them; lightning can still electrocute them; a magically hurled stone can still crush bone; a collapsing wall remains a collapsing wall. The resistance applies primarily to the Wyre acting directly upon the ogre body.

Ogres are also generally less sensitive to the Wyre than orcs or trolls. Individuals capable of becoming shamans are correspondingly rare. In Ogrish, shamanism is called zarug and a shaman a zarugan. Their lower sensitivity and their resistance to direct magical alteration are understood as related aspects of the same physiology.

The biological trait does not determine the detailed practices of shamanism. Training, techniques, and magical limits belong to the dedicated magic records.

Environmental Adaptation

Ogres tolerate a broad range of climates and can function well in hot, dry environments when sufficient water is available.

Their large bodies retain heat readily, making hot, humid conditions much more difficult, especially during prolonged exertion. Efficient sweating and strong surface circulation help, but humidity limits evaporative cooling.

Their body mass also gives them good natural tolerance for cold, though they are not specialized cold-climate people in the way dwarves are.

Reproduction and Heredity

Ogres reproduce at a moderate-to-low rate.

Single births are overwhelmingly normal and twins are rare. Pregnancy lasts roughly 11–12 months. Among ogres who reproduce, around two to four children across a lifetime is ordinary.

Pregnancy and nursing require very large amounts of food, water, and minerals, and recovery between births is comparatively long. Chronic food shortage strongly suppresses fertility.

Children inherit combinations of stature, mass, body composition, complexion, facial structure, and other traits from both parents. Even small ogres retain the characteristic broad and heavy skeletal frame.
