Gnolls
Overview
Gnolls are an independent mortal lineage that appeared after goblins, tsekesh, and kobolds but before humans, dwarves, and elves.
They are furred, long-legged open-country people distinguished by exceptional scent perception, powerful jaws, digestive resilience, and exceptional overland movement. Among the major mortal peoples, gnolls are the fastest on foot over short pursuit distances while remaining highly capable long-distance travelers.
Ancestry
Gnolls are not biologically related to akkari or ossur despite appearing during roughly the same broad period of mortal history.
They represent an independent lineage with no established close relationship to the older shared branches or the younger human–dwarf–elf branch.
Physical Characteristics
Gnolls are somewhat shorter than humans on average but are lean, strongly built, and long-legged. Their legs are digitigrade, with elongated lower limb and foot structure adapted for efficient running and rapid acceleration.
They have elongated muzzles, large mobile ears, powerful necks and shoulders, full coats of fur, strong grasping hands with thick nails rather than true predatory claws, and running-oriented feet with tough pads and short robust claws.
Their jaws are deep and heavily muscled. Gnolls have robust differentiated teeth capable of both tearing and crushing, and their bite is exceptionally powerful relative to body size.
Males and females are similar in average size and strength, with extensive individual overlap. Neither sex possesses a consistent biological advantage large enough to explain the strongly matriarchal structure of traditional gnoll society.
Variation
Gnoll coats vary widely in color and marking.
Common colors include sandy tan, ochre, reddish brown, dark brown, cream, grey, charcoal, and mixed earth tones. Markings may include spots, mottling, darker dorsal areas, pale undersides, broken patches, and other irregular patterns.
Regional populations can develop recognizable trends in coat color and markings. Southern dryland populations may favor sandy, tawny, ochre, or reddish coats with dark spotting, while wetter lowland populations may show more brown, cream, grey, and heavier mottling.
These are broad regional tendencies rather than rigid subspecies.
Growth and Lifespan
Gnolls generally reach full physical maturity around 15–17 years.
A healthy gnoll commonly lives around 65–85 years. Reaching 90 or more is notably old, while approaching 100 is exceptional.
Senses and Physiology
Smell is the dominant gnoll sense.
Gnolls can distinguish individuals by scent, follow relatively fresh trails, detect blood and food from considerable distances under favorable conditions, and recognize many changes associated with injury, disease, exertion, and fear. This does not amount to literal emotion-reading.
Their eyesight and hearing are good but not exceptionally specialized.
Gnolls possess highly acidic stomachs and resilient digestive systems. They can safely consume older meat, heavily fermented food, and other material that carries a greater risk of foodborne illness for many peoples.
They are not immune to rot, poison, parasites, or disease.
Their long legs and efficient gait make them exceptional overland travelers. Upright bipedal running is the normal gait for travel, hunting, and ordinary combat.
Gnolls can also drop to all fours for short or medium bursts of maximum acceleration and speed. Their shoulders, wrists, hands, spine, and hips are adapted to tolerate this load without making quadrupedal movement their default posture. The gait is most useful for a chase, charge, escape, or sudden crossing of open ground rather than prolonged travel.
This facultative quadrupedal sprint does not reduce normal manual ability. Gnolls remain fully capable weapon users, toolmakers, and craftspeople while upright.
The Wyre
Gnolls possess a distinctive but highly specialized relationship with the Wyre through blood. Most gnolls cannot consciously manipulate this relationship, but it forms the biological basis of the later magical tradition of bloodwaking, called gharvak in Gnollish.
Rare individuals called bloodwakers can perceive the Wyre carried through fresh blood with a clarity ordinary gnolls do not possess. In Gnollish, a bloodwaker is a gharvakar. This perception is not simply an extension of smell, even though gnoll scent is already exceptionally strong.
The aptitude varies greatly between individuals. A bloodwaker must still learn how to interpret and control what they sense; the presence of the aptitude does not provide automatic spellcasting or knowledge.
Ordinary gnolls can nevertheless be affected by gharrak, a blood frenzy in which fresh spilled blood interacts with gnoll physiology and the Wyre to intensify speed, aggression, pursuit drive, pain tolerance, and physical commitment. Skilled bloodwakers are unusually capable of remaining functional within this state and influencing its intensity.
Bloodwaking requires an actual blood connection. It does not grant unrestricted control over the blood inside any untouched living creature. The detailed techniques, ranges, limits, blood bonds, tracking methods, and other workings of bloodwaking belong to the dedicated magic records.
Environmental Adaptation
Gnoll physiology strongly favors open terrain.
They perform especially well across plains, dry grasslands, scrub, semi-desert, broad river valleys, rolling lowlands, and other landscapes where long-distance movement and scent tracking are effective.
They can live in wetter lowlands and fertile plains, but dense forest is generally less favorable. Heavy vegetation restricts movement and disrupts the open-country tracking and pursuit style their bodies support best.
Reproduction and Heredity
Gnolls reproduce at a moderate-to-high rate.
Pregnancy lasts roughly seven to eight months. Single births and twins are both common, while triplets occur regularly enough not to be extraordinary.
Among gnolls who reproduce, around four to seven children across a lifetime is ordinary.
Children inherit coat color, patterning, stature, facial structure, jaw proportions, and other traits from both parents. Regional markings can persist across generations while remaining highly variable within populations.
